On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting dust on their heads.

It was the 24th day of the seventh month. The Israelites gathered together again. They didn’t eat any food. They wore the rough clothing people wear when they’re sad. They put dust on their heads.

Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the people of Israel were assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and with earth on their heads.

On October 31 the people assembled again, and this time they fasted and dressed in burlap and sprinkled dust on their heads.

王的命令和谕旨传到各省，各地的犹太人极其悲伤，他们禁食、哭泣、哀号，许多人身披麻衣躺在灰中。

“你们收割完后，从七月十五日起，要一连七天庆祝耶和华的节期，第一天和第八天是安息之日。

“你去召集书珊城所有的犹太人为我禁食，三天三夜不吃不喝，我和我的宫女也要这样禁食。然后，我要违例去见王，我若死就死吧。”

他们远远地看见约伯，几乎认不出是他，禁不住放声大哭，各自撕裂外袍，扬起尘土，让土落在头上。

“你把以下条例告诉以色列人。“从七月十五日开始，你们要一连七天向耶和华守住棚节。

那日，万军之耶和华呼召你们哭泣哀号，剃光头发，身披麻衣。

以色列全军来到伯特利，坐在耶和华面前哀哭，那天他们一直禁食到晚上，又在耶和华面前献上燔祭和平安祭。

祭司啊，穿着丧服痛哭吧；在祭坛前事奉的人啊，要哀号；我上帝的仆人啊，要披上麻衣过夜；因为再无素祭和奠祭献到你们上帝的殿中了。你们要定一个禁食的日子，举行庄严的聚会，召集全国的长老和人民，到你们的上帝耶和华的殿中，向耶和华呼求。

尼尼微城的人相信了上帝的话，便宣告禁食，所有的人，无论大小贵贱都换上麻衣。尼尼微王听到这消息后，便走下宝座，脱下王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。王又向全城颁布命令，说：“王和大臣有令，所有的人都必须禁食，牛羊牲畜都不许吃草也不许喝水。人和牲畜都必须披上麻衣，众人要向上帝恳切呼求，改邪归正，停止作恶。

约沙法很害怕，决定寻求耶和华，在整个犹大宣告禁食。

七月二十三日，所罗门王让民众各回本乡。他们看见耶和华向大卫、所罗门和祂的以色列子民所施的恩惠，就满心欢喜地回家去了。

要在锡安山吹响号角，宣布禁食的日子，举行庄严的聚会。要招聚老人，聚集孩童，包括吃奶的婴儿；要吩咐新郎出洞房、新娘出内室；要召集全体人民，让他们洁净自己。让事奉耶和华的祭司站在圣殿门廊和祭坛中间，哭泣恳求说：“耶和华啊，求你顾惜你的子民，不要让外族人侮辱、讥笑你的产业说，‘你们的上帝在哪里呢？’”
