尽管如此，他们当中大多数人不讨上帝的喜悦，倒毙在旷野。

听见祂的声音却又悖逆祂的是谁呢？不就是摩西从埃及领出来的那些人吗？四十年之久惹上帝发怒的是谁呢？不就是那些犯罪作恶并倒毙在旷野的人吗？上帝起誓不准谁进入祂的安息呢？不就是那些不肯信从的人吗？可见，他们不能进入上帝的安息是因为不信的缘故。

我们从离开加低斯·巴尼亚到穿过撒烈溪用了三十八年。期间，那一代战士都死光了，正如耶和华的誓言。其实是耶和华的手攻击他们，直到把他们从营中全部消灭。

所以上帝使他们虚度一生，让他们的岁月充满恐惧。

其中没有一个是摩西和祭司亚伦从前在西奈旷野登记的人。因为耶和华说过，那批人都要死在旷野。果然，除了耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚以外，上次登记的人无一存活。
