他們來到以實各谷，從那裡砍下了一根葡萄枝子，上頭只有一掛葡萄，兩個人用槓抬著回來；他們也帶了些石榴和無花果回來。因為以色列人從那裡砍來的那掛葡萄，所以那地方叫作以實各谷。四十天以後，他們窺探那地完畢，就回來。他們來到了巴蘭曠野的加低斯，見摩西、亞倫和以色列的全體會眾，向摩西、亞倫及全體會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。他們告訴摩西：“我們到了你派我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜的地，這就是那地的果子。只是住在那地的人強壯，城又堅固又十分高大，並且我們在那裡也看見了亞衲族人的後裔。有亞瑪力人住在南地；赫人、耶布斯人、亞摩利人住在山地；迦南人住在海邊和約旦河沿岸。”迦勒在摩西面前使眾人鎮靜，說：“我們立刻上去，佔領那地吧！因為我們必能得勝。”但是，那些與他同去的人卻說：“我們不能上去攻擊那民，因為他們比我們強。”那些探子就他們窺探之地向以色列人報惡信，說：“我們經過要窺探的地方，是個吞吃居民的地方；我們在那裡看見的人，個個都高大。在那裡我們看見了巨人，就是亞衲人的子孫，是巨人的後裔；我們看自己好像是蚱蜢，他們看我們也是這樣。”當時，全體會眾大聲喧嚷；那夜眾民都哭號。以色列人向摩西和亞倫發怨言；全體會眾都對他們說：“但願我們早死在埃及地，或死在這曠野。耶和華為甚麼把我們領到這地來，死在刀劍之下呢？我們的妻子和孩子要被擄掠。我們回埃及去，豈不更好嗎？”於是他們彼此說：“我們另立一個首領，回埃及去吧。”摩西和亞倫就俯伏在以色列全體會眾面前。窺探那地的人中，有嫩的兒子約書亞和耶孚尼的兒子迦勒；他們撕裂衣服，對以色列全體會眾說：“我們去窺探的那地，是十分美好的地方。耶和華若是喜悅我們，就必把我們領進那地，把那地賜給我們，那地原是流奶與蜜的地。只要你們不背叛耶和華，就不必怕那地的人，因為他們是我們的食物；蔭庇他們的，已經離開他們了，耶和華卻與我們同在；不要怕他們。”全體會眾都說要用石頭打死他們二人。這時，耶和華的榮光在會幕中向以色列眾人顯現。

於是他們轉身出發，上了山地，到了以實各谷，窺探那地。他們手裡拿著那地的果子，帶下來到我們這裡，並且向我們回報，說：‘耶和華我們的神要賜給我們的地是美地。’“但你們不肯上去，竟違背了耶和華你們的神的吩咐；你們在帳幕裡抱怨，說：‘耶和華因為恨我們，所以把我們從埃及地領出來，要把我們交在亞摩利人手中，消滅我們。我們上哪裡去呢？我們的兄弟使我們心灰意冷，說：那地的人比我們高大；他們的城邑又大又堅固，高聳入天；我們在那裡還看見有亞衲族的人。’
