你不可跪拜他們的神像，也不可事奉它們，不可作他們所作的，不可模仿他們的行為，卻要把神像完全拆毀，打碎他們的柱像。

“你們不可為自己做偶像，不可為自己立雕像或神柱，也不可在你們的境內安置石像，向它跪拜；因為我是耶和華你們的神。

耶和華你的神把他們交給你，你打敗了他們的時候，你要完全毀滅他們，不可與他們立約，也不可恩待他們。不可與他們通婚，不可把你的女兒嫁給他們的兒子，也不可為你的兒子娶他們的女兒。因為他必使你的兒子離開我，去事奉別的神，以致耶和華向你們發烈怒，就快快地把你們消滅。你們卻要這樣待他們：拆毀他們的祭壇，打碎他們的神柱，砍下他們的亞舍拉，用火焚燒他們的雕像。

只是在耶和華你的神賜給你作產業的這些國民的城市裡，凡有氣息的，連一個你也不可讓他活著；只要照著耶和華你的神吩咐你的，把赫人、亞摩利人、迦南人、比利洗人、希未人、耶布斯人，完全滅絕；免得他們教導你們學習一切可憎的事，就是他們對自己的神所行的事，以致你們得罪耶和華你們的神。

我要限定你的境界，從紅海直到非利士海，從曠野直到大河。我要把那地的居民交在你手中，你要把他們從你面前驅逐出去。不可與他們和他們的神立約。不可讓他們住在你的境內，恐怕他們使你得罪我；如果你事奉他們的神，這必成為你的網羅。”

你們不可與這地的居民立約，要拆毀他們的祭壇。’你們竟沒有聽從我的話；你們作的是甚麼呢？

他們沒有照著耶和華吩咐他們的，滅絕外族的人民，反而和外族人混居雜處，學習他們的風俗習慣。他們又事奉外族人的偶像，這就成了他們的網羅。

你們要把你們趕走的列國的人事奉神的地方，無論是在高山上，在山岡上，或是在各青翠樹下，都要完全毀壞；也要拆毀他們的祭壇，打碎他們的神柱；用火焚燒他們的亞舍拉，砍倒他們的神的雕像，並且把他們的名字從這地方除滅。

你要小心，不可與你所去的那地的居民立約，恐怕這事在你中間成為陷阱。他們的祭壇你們卻要拆毀，他們的柱像你們要打碎，他們的亞舍拉你們要砍下。你不可敬拜別的神，因為耶和華是忌邪的神，他名為忌邪者。恐怕你與那地的居民立約，他們隨從自己的神行邪淫，給自己的神獻祭的時候，有人叫你，你就吃他的祭物；又恐怕你給你的兒子娶他們的女兒為妻，他們的女兒隨從自己的神行邪淫的時候，使你的兒子也隨從她們的神行邪淫。你不可為自己鑄造神像。

他們的神像，你們要用火焚燒；神像上的金銀，你不可貪愛，也不可據為己有，免得你因此陷入網羅；因為這是耶和華你的神厭惡的。可厭惡的物，你不可帶進家裡去，免得你與那物一樣成了當毀滅的；你要非常憎恨它，十分厭惡它，因為這是當毀滅的物。”

使你們不與你們中間剩下的這些國家的人來往；他們的神的名字，你們不可提，不可指著他們起誓，不可事奉他們，也不可敬拜他們；

那時，你要自己謹慎，不可在他們從你的面前被消滅以後，隨從他們的惡俗而陷入網羅，也不可求問他們的神，說：‘這些國的人怎樣事奉他們的神，我也要這樣行。’你不可向耶和華你的神這樣行，因為耶和華恨惡的一切可厭惡的事，他們都向他們的神行了，甚至把自己的兒女用火焚燒，獻給他們的神。

以色列人用刀擊殺了城中所有的人，把他們完全毀滅；有氣息的一個也沒有留下；約書亞又放火燒了夏瑣。約書亞奪取了那些王的一切城鎮，又擒獲那些城鎮所有的王；他用刀擊殺了他們，把一切完全毀滅，正如耶和華僕人摩西所吩咐的。
