This is the vision about Edom that Obadiah had. Here is what the Lord and King says about Edom. We’ve heard a message from the Lord. A messenger was sent to the nations. The Lord told him to say,“ Get up! Let us go and make war against Edom.”

I will lay it waste, and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword.I will take vengeance on Edom by the hand of my people Israel, and they will deal with Edom in accordance with my anger and my wrath; they will know my vengeance, declares the Sovereign Lord.’” (niv)

Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength?“ It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.”Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress?“ I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing.It was for me the day of vengeance; the year for me to redeem had come.I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave support; so my own arm achieved salvation for me, and my own wrath sustained me.I trampled the nations in my anger; in my wrath I made them drunk and poured their blood on the ground.” (niv)

Then you will know that I am the Lord.“‘ Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax,therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste and cut off from it all who come and go.I will fill your mountains with the slain; those killed by the sword will fall on your hills and in your valleys and in all your ravines.I will make you desolate forever; your towns will not be inhabited. Then you will know that I am the Lord.“‘ Because you have said,“ These two nations and countries will be ours and we will take possession of them,” even though I the Lord was there,therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will treat you in accordance with the anger and jealousy you showed in your hatred of them and I will make myself known among them when I judge you.Then you will know that I the Lord have heard all the contemptible things you have said against the mountains of Israel. You said,“ They have been laid waste and have been given over to us to devour.”You boasted against me and spoke against me without restraint, and I heard it.This is what the Sovereign Lord says: While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate.Because you rejoiced when the inheritance of Israel became desolate, that is how I will treat you. You will be desolate, Mount Seir, you and all of Edom. Then they will know that I am the Lord.’” (niv)

But Egypt will be desolate, Edom a desert waste, because of violence done to the people of Judah, in whose land they shed innocent blood. (niv)

Come near, you nations, and listen; pay attention, you peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world, and all that comes out of it!The Lord is angry with all nations; his wrath is on all their armies. He will totally destroy them, he will give them over to slaughter.Their slain will be thrown out, their dead bodies will stink; the mountains will be soaked with their blood.All the stars in the sky will be dissolved and the heavens rolled up like a scroll; all the starry host will fall like withered leaves from the vine, like shriveled figs from the fig tree.My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; see, it descends in judgment on Edom, the people I have totally destroyed.The sword of the Lord is bathed in blood, it is covered with fat— the blood of lambs and goats, fat from the kidneys of rams. She will become a haunt for jackals, a home for owls.Desert creatures will meet with hyenas, and wild goats will bleat to each other; there the night creatures will also lie down and find for themselves places of rest.The owl will nest there and lay eggs, she will hatch them, and care for her young under the shadow of her wings; there also the falcons will gather, each with its mate.Look in the scroll of the Lord and read: None of these will be missing, not one will lack her mate. For it is his mouth that has given the order, and his Spirit will gather them together.He allots their portions; his hand distributes them by measure. Rejoice and be glad, Daughter Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked.Your punishment will end, Daughter Zion; he will not prolong your exile. But he will punish your sin, Daughter Edom, and expose your wickedness. (niv)

If thieves came during the night, would they not steal only as much as they wanted?But I will strip Esau bare; I will uncover his hiding places, so that he cannot conceal himself. His armed men are destroyed, also his allies and neighbors, so there is no one to say,‘ Leave your fatherless children; I will keep them alive. Your widows too can depend on me.’”This is what the Lord says:“ If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, why should you go unpunished? You will not go unpunished, but must drink it.I swear by myself,” declares the Lord,“ that Bozrah will become a ruin and a curse, an object of horror and reproach; and all its towns will be in ruins forever.”I have heard a message from the Lord; an envoy was sent to the nations to say,“ Assemble yourselves to attack it! Rise up for battle!”“ Now I will make you small among the nations, despised by mankind.The terror you inspire and the pride of your heart have deceived you, you who live in the clefts of the rocks, who occupy the heights of the hill. Though you build your nest as high as the eagle’s, from there I will bring you down,” declares the Lord.“ Edom will become an object of horror; all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff because of all its wounds.As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown, along with their neighboring towns,” says the Lord,“ so no one will live there; no people will dwell in it.“ Like a lion coming up from Jordan’s thickets to a rich pastureland, I will chase Edom from its land in an instant. Who is the chosen one I will appoint for this? Who is like me and who can challenge me? And what shepherd can stand against me?”Therefore, hear what the Lord has planned against Edom, what he has purposed against those who live in Teman: The young of the flock will be dragged away; their pasture will be appalled at their fate.At the sound of their fall the earth will tremble; their cry will resound to the Red Sea.Look! Go, swift messengers, to a people tall and smooth-skinned, to a people feared far and wide, an aggressive nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers.All you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it, and when a trumpet sounds, you will hear it.
