Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.

我兒啊，你若為朋友擔保，替陌生人擊掌，你就被口中的言語套住，被嘴裏的言語抓住。我兒啊，你既落在朋友手中，當這樣行才可救自己：你要謙卑自己，去懇求你的朋友。不要讓你的眼睛睡覺，不可容你的眼皮打盹。要救自己，如羚羊脫離獵人的手，如鳥脫離捕鳥人的手。

不要為人擊掌擔保，也不要為債務作保。你若沒有甚麼可償還，何必使人奪去你睡臥的床呢？

誰為陌生人擔保，就拿誰的衣服；誰為外邦人作保，誰就要承當。
