Before a downfall the heart is haughty, but humility comes before honor.

If a person’s heart is proud, they will be destroyed. So don’t be proud if you want to be honored.

For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for“ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Will you then boast,‘ I am a god!’ to those who kill you? To them you will be no god but merely a man!

For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone— gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!So God has sent this hand to write this message.

The moment you began praying, a command was given. And now I am here to tell you what it was, for you are very precious to God. Listen carefully so that you can understand the meaning of your vision.

I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain.

I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance.”After the Lord had finished speaking to Job, he said to Eliphaz the Temanite:“ I am angry with you and your two friends, for you have not spoken accurately about me, as my servant Job has.So take seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. My servant Job will pray for you, and I will accept his prayer on your behalf. I will not treat you as you deserve, for you have not spoken accurately about me, as my servant Job has.”So Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite did as the Lord commanded them, and the Lord accepted Job’s prayer.When Job prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes. In fact, the Lord gave him twice as much as before!Then all his brothers, sisters, and former friends came and feasted with him in his home. And they consoled him and comforted him because of all the trials the Lord had brought against him. And each of them brought him a gift of money and a gold ring.So the Lord blessed Job in the second half of his life even more than in the beginning. For now he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 teams of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.He also gave Job seven more sons and three more daughters.He named his first daughter Jemimah, the second Keziah, and the third Keren happuch.In all the land no women were as lovely as the daughters of Job. And their father put them into his will along with their brothers.Job lived 140 years after that, living to see four generations of his children and grandchildren.Then he died, an old man who had lived a long, full life.

Then I said,“ It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips. Yet I have seen the King, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.”Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs.He touched my lips with it and said,“ See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”Then I heard the Lord asking,“ Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said,“ Here I am. Send me.”And he said,“ Yes, go, and say to this people,‘ Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.’Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to me for healing.”Then I said,“ Lord, how long will this go on?” And he replied,“ Until their towns are empty, their houses are deserted, and the whole country is a wasteland;until the Lord has sent everyone away, and the entire land of Israel lies deserted.If even a tenth— a remnant— survive, it will be invaded again and burned. But as a terebinth or oak tree leaves a stump when it is cut down, so Israel’s stump will be a holy seed.”
