I went past the field of someone who didn’t want to work. I went past the vineyard of someone who didn’t have any sense.

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of a man lacking sense,

I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense.

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of one lacking sense.

I passed by the field of a lazy one, And by the vineyard of a person lacking sense,

I went by the field of the lazy man, And by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding;

I went by the field of the sluggard, And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I went by the field of a slacker and by the vineyard of a man lacking sense.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

I passed by the field of a sluggard, by the vineyard of one who lacks wisdom.

I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding:

As I have observed, those who plow evil and those who sow trouble reap it.

“ Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen,

“ We have examined this, and it is true. So hear it and apply it to yourself.”

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.Then too, I saw the wicked buried— those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong.

But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.

I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.

Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!It has no commander, no overseer or ruler,yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep?A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.A troublemaker and a villain, who goes about with a corrupt mouth,who winks maliciously with his eye, signals with his feet and motions with his fingers,who plots evil with deceit in his heart— he always stirs up conflict.Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant; he will suddenly be destroyed— without remedy.There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil,a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors— and they have no comforter.And I declared that the dead, who had already died, are happier than the living, who are still alive.But better than both is the one who has never been born, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun.And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.Fools fold their hands and ruin themselves.Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:There was a man all alone; he had neither son nor brother. There was no end to his toil, yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.“ For whom am I toiling,” he asked,“ and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?” This too is meaningless— a miserable business!

Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.

In this meaningless life of mine I have seen both of these: the righteous perishing in their righteousness, and the wicked living long in their wickedness.

Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of one who has no sense.

The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
