许多人说：“谁能让我们看到好处呢？”耶和华啊，求你用你的容光照耀我们！

有許多人說：誰能指示我們甚麼好處？耶和華啊，求你仰起臉來，光照我們。

多曰有誰福我、耶和華歟、以爾容光照予兮、

民之多言、謂誰福我兮。予曰、願耶和華色相之光華、於我而普照。

有多人云、惟願得福、主歟、我惟願主面之榮光照臨我儕、

應獻忠誠祭。順命斯無失。

Many, Lord, are asking,“ Who will bring us prosperity?” Let the light of your face shine on us.

Lord, many are asking,“ Who will make us successful?” Lord, may you do good things for us.

There are many who say,“ Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”

Many people say,“ Who will show us better times?” Let your face smile on us, Lord.

Many are saying,“ Who will show us anything good?” Lift up the light of Your face upon us, Lord!

There are many who say,“ Who will show us any good?” Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us.

Many there are that say, Who will show us any good? Jehovah, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

Many are saying,“ Who can show us anything good?” Look on us with favor, Lord.

[ There be] many that say, Who will shew us[ any] good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.

Restore us, LORD, God of Armies; make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.

Do not be afraid when a person gets rich, when the wealth of his house increases.For when he dies, he will take nothing at all; his wealth will not follow him down.Though he blesses himself during his lifetime— and you are acclaimed when you do well for yourself—he will go to the generation of his ancestors; they will never see the light.Mankind, with his assets but without understanding, is like the animals that perish.

For they did not take the land by their sword— their arm did not bring them victory— but by your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable toward them.

The pay that you withheld from the workers who mowed your fields cries out, and the outcry of the harvesters has reached the ears of the Lord of Armies.You have lived luxuriously on the earth and have indulged yourselves. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

Listen, Shepherd of Israel, who leads Joseph like a flock; you who sit enthroned between the cherubim, shineon Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh. Rally your power and come to save us.Restore us, God; make your face shine on us, so that we may be saved.

Come now, you who say,“ Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.”

Yes, a person goes about like a mere shadow. Indeed, they rush around in vain, gathering possessions without knowing who will get them.

I explored with my mind the pull of wine on my body— my mind still guiding me with wisdom— and how to grasp folly, until I could see what is good for people to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.I increased my achievements. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.I made gardens and parks for myself and planted every kind of fruit tree in them.I constructed reservoirs for myself from which to irrigate a grove of flourishing trees.I acquired male and female servants and had slaves who were born in my house. I also owned livestock— large herds and flocks— more than all who were before me in Jerusalem.I also amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I gathered male and female singers for myself, and many concubines, the delights of men.So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem; my wisdom also remained with me.All that my eyes desired, I did not deny them. I did not refuse myself any pleasure, for I took pleasure in all my struggles. This was my reward for all my struggles.When I considered all that I had accomplished and what I had labored to achieve, I found everything to be futile and a pursuit of the wind. There was nothing to be gained under the sun.Then I turned to consider wisdom, madness, and folly, for what will the king’s successor be like? He will do what has already been done.And I realized that there is an advantage to wisdom over folly, like the advantage of light over darkness.The wise person has eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both.So I said to myself,“ What happens to the fool will also happen to me. Why then have I been overly wise?” And I said to myself that this is also futile.For, just like the fool, there is no lasting remembrance of the wise, since in the days to come both will be forgotten. How is it that the wise person dies just like the fool?Therefore, I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me. For everything is futile and a pursuit of the wind.I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the one who comes after me.And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will take over all my work that I labored at skillfully under the sun. This too is futile.So I began to give myself over to despair concerning all my work that I had labored at under the sun.When there is a person whose work was done with wisdom, knowledge, and skill, and he must give his portion to a person who has not worked for it, this too is futile and a great wrong.For what does a person get with all his work and all his efforts that he labors at under the sun?For all his days are filled with grief, and his occupation is sorrowful; even at night, his mind does not rest. This too is futile.There is nothing better for a person than to eat, drink, and enjoy his work. I have seen that even this is from God’s hand,because who can eat and who can enjoy life apart from him?For to the person who is pleasing in his sight, he gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and accumulating in order to give to the one who is pleasing in God’s sight. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

You give him blessings forever; you cheer him with joy in your presence.

Then I’ll say to myself,“ You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’

Why do you spend silver on what is not food, and your wages on what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and you will enjoy the choicest of foods.
