My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down.

because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger.

I’m troubled by what my enemies say about me. I’m upset because they say they will harm me. They cause me all kinds of suffering. When they are angry, they attack me with their words.

Protect me from wicked people who attack me, from murderous enemies who surround me.

The Lord replies,“ I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

If people crush underfoot all the prisoners of the land,if they deprive others of their rights in defiance of the Most High,if they twist justice in the courts— doesn’t the Lord see all these things?

For strangers are attacking me; violent people are trying to kill me. They care nothing for God. Interlude

“ My lord the king, please forgive me,” he pleaded.“ Forget the terrible thing your servant did when you left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind.

Then Absalom would say,“ You’ve really got a strong case here! It’s too bad the king doesn’t have anyone to hear it.

Malicious witnesses testify against me. They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about.

They say,“ God has abandoned him. Let’s go and get him, for no one will help him now.”

They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.

Do not let me fall into their hands. For they accuse me of things I’ve never done; with every breath they threaten me with violence.

Inside, the leading priests and the entire high council were trying to find witnesses who would lie about Jesus, so they could put him to death.
