號角聲越來越強、強到極點，摩西就說話，上帝在雷轟中回答他。

這些水是米利巴水，因為在那裏以色列人向永恆主吵鬧，永恆主在他們中間顯示為聖。

法老越走越近的時候，以色列人一舉目，看見埃及人前進着趕來，就極其懼怕；向永恆主哀叫，

那許多日子當中、埃及王死了。以色列人因作苦工而歎息，就哀呼；他們作苦工的呼救聲上達於上帝。

晨更時候，永恆主在火柱雲柱中往下眺望埃及人的營，就使埃及人的營潰亂了。

論利未是說：『永恆主啊，你的土明烏陵都在你堅貞之士那裏；你在瑪撒曾試驗他，你對米利巴水的事、曾和他爭論。

因為他專心愛我，我就解救他，保護他於高處，因為他認識我的名。他向我呼求，我就應他；他在患難中、我必和他同在；我必救拔他，使他尊貴。

當那日、永恆主拯救了以色列人脫離埃及人的手；以色列人看見埃及人都死在海邊。以色列人看見永恆主向埃及人所顯大能的手，其眾民就敬畏永恆主，信服永恆主和他的僕人摩西。

『亞倫將要被收殮歸他先族人了；他必不得以進我所賜給以色列人的地，因為在米利巴水的事上、你們違背了我所吩咐的。

人民就和摩西吵鬧，說：『給我們水喝吧。』摩西對他們說：『你們為甚麼和我吵鬧？為甚麼試探永恆主呢？』人民在那裏渴得要水喝，就向摩西發怨言說：『你這個人為甚麼將我們從埃及領出來，要使我們和兒女跟牲畜都渴死呢？』摩西向永恆主哀叫說：『我要怎樣對付這人民呢？他們幾乎要拿石頭打死我了。』永恆主對摩西說：『你為首在人民前頭走過去，帶着以色列幾個長老和你一同去；手裏要拿着你先前擊打河水的手杖而去。看吧，我必站在你前面，在何烈磐石那裏；你要擊打磐石，就有水從磐石裏出來，讓人民喝。』摩西就在以色列長老眼前這樣行了。他給那地方起名叫瑪撒，又叫米利巴，因為以色列人在吵鬧，又因為他們試探永恆主說：『永恆主是不是真地在我們中間呢？』

眾民見了雷轟、閃電、角聲和山上冒着煙；就懼怕，直發顫，遠遠地站着。對摩西說：『你對我們說話吧，我們就要聽；可別讓上帝和我們說話呀，恐怕我們死亡。』摩西對人民說：『不要懼怕，因為上帝來臨，是要試驗你們，叫你們時常敬畏他，不至於犯罪。』於是人民遠遠地站着；摩西就挨近暗霧那裏，暗霧就是上帝之所在。
