波阿斯對路得說：「女兒啊，聽我說，不要往別人田裏拾取麥穗，也不要離開這裏，要常與我使女們在一處。

「弟兄同居，若死了一個，沒有兒子，死人的妻不可出嫁外人，她丈夫的兄弟當盡弟兄的本分，娶她為妻，與她同房。婦人生的長子必歸死兄的名下，免得他的名在以色列中塗抹了。那人若不願意娶他哥哥的妻，他哥哥的妻就要到城門長老那裏，說：『我丈夫的兄弟不肯在以色列中興起他哥哥的名字，不給我盡弟兄的本分。』本城的長老就要召那人來問他，他若執意說：『我不願意娶她』，他哥哥的妻就要當着長老到那人的跟前，脫了他的鞋，吐唾沫在他臉上，說：『凡不為哥哥建立家室的都要這樣待他。』在以色列中，他的名必稱為脫鞋之家。」

拿俄米對兒婦說：「願那人蒙耶和華賜福，因為他不斷地恩待活人死人。」拿俄米又說：「那是我們本族的人，是一個至近的親屬。」摩押女子路得說：「他對我說：『你要緊隨我的僕人拾取麥穗，直等他們收完了我的莊稼。』」拿俄米對兒婦路得說：「女兒啊，你跟着他的使女出去，不叫人遇見你在別人田間，這才為好。」於是路得與波阿斯的使女常在一處拾取麥穗，直到收完了大麥和小麥。路得仍與婆婆同住。

拿俄米的丈夫以利米勒的親族中，有一個人名叫波阿斯，是個大財主。

因那使人成聖的和那些得以成聖的，都是出於一。所以，他稱他們為弟兄也不以為恥，說：我要將你的名傳與我的弟兄，在會中我要頌揚你；又說：我要倚賴他；又說：看哪，我與神所給我的兒女。兒女既同有血肉之體，他也照樣親自成了血肉之體，特要藉着死敗壞那掌死權的，就是魔鬼，
