他們問萬軍之耶和華殿裡的祭司和先知：「我們還要照多年的慣例在五月哀傷、禁食嗎？」

耶和華派拿單先知去見大衛。拿單對大衛說：「一座城裡有兩個人，一個富有，一個貧窮。

要招聚老人，聚集孩童，包括吃奶的嬰兒；要吩咐新郎出洞房、新娘出內室；要召集全體人民，讓他們潔淨自己。

我聽見以法蓮在為自己悲歎，『我們就像未經馴服的牛犢，你管教我們，使我們順服，求你使我們回到你身邊，重新復興，因為你是我們的上帝耶和華。

夫妻不可虧負彼此的需要，除非雙方同意，才可以暫時分房，以便專心祈禱。以後，二人仍要恢復正常的夫妻生活，免得撒旦趁你們情不自禁的時候引誘你們。

因此，地要悲哀，天要昏暗，因為我言出必行，決不反悔。」

從光禿的山頭傳來聲音，是以色列子民哭泣呼求的聲音，因為他們走入歧途，忘掉了他們的上帝耶和華。

一天，王對拿單先知說：「你看！我住在香柏木造的王宮中，但上帝的約櫃還留在帳篷裡。」拿單答道：「你只管照著自己的想法去做吧，因為耶和華與你同在。」當晚耶和華對拿單說：

尼尼微城的人相信了上帝的話，便宣告禁食，所有的人，無論大小貴賤都換上麻衣。尼尼微王聽到這消息後，便走下寶座，脫下王袍，披上麻衣，坐在爐灰中。

晚上，法老及其臣僕和所有埃及人都驚醒了，到處都是哭號聲，因為沒有一家不死人的。

耶和華讓我對君王和太后說：「從寶座上下來吧，因為你們頭上華美的王冠將要掉落。」
