  • Judges 10:6 - Again the Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight. They served the images of Baal and Ashtoreth, and the gods of Aram, Sidon, Moab, Ammon, and Philistia. They abandoned the Lord and no longer served him at all.
  • Judges 10:7 - So the Lord burned with anger against Israel, and he turned them over to the Philistines and the Ammonites,
  • Judges 10:8 - who began to oppress them that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the Israelites east of the Jordan River in the land of the Amorites (that is, in Gilead).
  • Judges 10:9 - The Ammonites also crossed to the west side of the Jordan and attacked Judah, Benjamin, and Ephraim. The Israelites were in great distress.
  • Judges 10:10 - Finally, they cried out to the Lord for help, saying, “We have sinned against you because we have abandoned you as our God and have served the images of Baal.”
  • Judges 10:11 - The Lord replied, “Did I not rescue you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
  • Judges 10:12 - the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Maonites? When they oppressed you, you cried out to me for help, and I rescued you.
  • Judges 10:13 - Yet you have abandoned me and served other gods. So I will not rescue you anymore.
  • Judges 10:14 - Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen! Let them rescue you in your hour of distress!”
  • Judges 10:15 - But the Israelites pleaded with the Lord and said, “We have sinned. Punish us as you see fit, only rescue us today from our enemies.”
  • Judges 10:16 - Then the Israelites put aside their foreign gods and served the Lord. And he was grieved by their misery.
  • Judges 10:17 - At that time the armies of Ammon had gathered for war and were camped in Gilead, and the people of Israel assembled and camped at Mizpah.
  • Judges 10:18 - The leaders of Gilead said to each other, “Whoever attacks the Ammonites first will become ruler over all the people of Gilead.”
  • Isaiah 11:14 - They will join forces to swoop down on Philistia to the west. Together they will attack and plunder the nations to the east. They will occupy the lands of Edom and Moab, and Ammon will obey them.
  • 2 Samuel 10:1 - Some time after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king.
  • 2 Samuel 10:2 - David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun just as his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent ambassadors to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death. But when David’s ambassadors arrived in the land of Ammon,
  • 2 Samuel 10:3 - the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, their master, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the city so they can come in and conquer it!”
  • 2 Samuel 10:4 - So Hanun seized David’s ambassadors and shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their robes at the buttocks, and sent them back to David in shame.
  • 2 Samuel 10:5 - When David heard what had happened, he sent messengers to tell the men, “Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out, and then come back.” For they felt deep shame because of their appearance.
  • 2 Samuel 10:6 - When the people of Ammon realized how seriously they had angered David, they sent and hired 20,000 Aramean foot soldiers from the lands of Beth-rehob and Zobah, 1,000 from the king of Maacah, and 12,000 from the land of Tob.
  • 2 Samuel 10:7 - When David heard about this, he sent Joab and all his warriors to fight them.
  • 2 Samuel 10:8 - The Ammonite troops came out and drew up their battle lines at the entrance of the city gate, while the Arameans from Zobah and Rehob and the men from Tob and Maacah positioned themselves to fight in the open fields.
  • 2 Samuel 10:9 - When Joab saw that he would have to fight on both the front and the rear, he chose some of Israel’s elite troops and placed them under his personal command to fight the Arameans in the fields.
  • 2 Samuel 10:10 - He left the rest of the army under the command of his brother Abishai, who was to attack the Ammonites.
  • 2 Samuel 10:11 - “If the Arameans are too strong for me, then come over and help me,” Joab told his brother. “And if the Ammonites are too strong for you, I will come and help you.
  • 2 Samuel 10:12 - Be courageous! Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. May the Lord’s will be done.”
  • 2 Samuel 10:13 - When Joab and his troops attacked, the Arameans began to run away.
  • 2 Samuel 10:14 - And when the Ammonites saw the Arameans running, they ran from Abishai and retreated into the city. After the battle was over, Joab returned to Jerusalem.
  • 2 Samuel 10:15 - The Arameans now realized that they were no match for Israel. So when they regrouped,
  • 2 Samuel 10:16 - they were joined by additional Aramean troops summoned by Hadadezer from the other side of the Euphrates River. These troops arrived at Helam under the command of Shobach, the commander of Hadadezer’s forces.
  • 2 Samuel 10:17 - When David heard what was happening, he mobilized all Israel, crossed the Jordan River, and led the army to Helam. The Arameans positioned themselves in battle formation and fought against David.
  • 2 Samuel 10:18 - But again the Arameans fled from the Israelites. This time David’s forces killed 700 charioteers and 40,000 foot soldiers, including Shobach, the commander of their army.
  • 2 Samuel 10:19 - When all the kings allied with Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they surrendered to Israel and became their subjects. After that, the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites.
  • Deuteronomy 2:9 - the Lord warned us, ‘Do not bother the Moabites, the descendants of Lot, or start a war with them. I have given them Ar as their property, and I will not give you any of their land.’”
  • Nehemiah 13:1 - On that same day, as the Book of Moses was being read to the people, the passage was found that said no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be permitted to enter the assembly of God.
  • Nehemiah 13:2 - For they had not provided the Israelites with food and water in the wilderness. Instead, they hired Balaam to curse them, though our God turned the curse into a blessing.
  • Nehemiah 13:3 - When this passage of the Law was read, all those of foreign descent were immediately excluded from the assembly.
  • Deuteronomy 23:3 - “No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants for ten generations may be admitted to the assembly of the Lord.
  • 1 Samuel 11:1 - About a month later, King Nahash of Ammon led his army against the Israelite town of Jabesh-gilead. But all the citizens of Jabesh asked for peace. “Make a treaty with us, and we will be your servants,” they pleaded.
  • 1 Samuel 11:2 - “All right,” Nahash said, “but only on one condition. I will gouge out the right eye of every one of you as a disgrace to all Israel!”
  • 1 Samuel 11:3 - “Give us seven days to send messengers throughout Israel!” replied the elders of Jabesh. “If no one comes to save us, we will agree to your terms.”
  • 1 Samuel 11:4 - When the messengers came to Gibeah of Saul and told the people about their plight, everyone broke into tears.
  • 1 Samuel 11:5 - Saul had been plowing a field with his oxen, and when he returned to town, he asked, “What’s the matter? Why is everyone crying?” So they told him about the message from Jabesh.
  • 1 Samuel 11:6 - Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul, and he became very angry.
  • 1 Samuel 11:7 - He took two oxen and cut them into pieces and sent the messengers to carry them throughout Israel with this message: “This is what will happen to the oxen of anyone who refuses to follow Saul and Samuel into battle!” And the Lord made the people afraid of Saul’s anger, and all of them came out together as one.
  • 1 Samuel 11:8 - When Saul mobilized them at Bezek, he found that there were 300,000 men from Israel and 30,000 men from Judah.
  • 1 Samuel 11:9 - So Saul sent the messengers back to Jabesh-gilead to say, “We will rescue you by noontime tomorrow!” There was great joy throughout the town when that message arrived!
  • 1 Samuel 11:10 - The men of Jabesh then told their enemies, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you can do to us whatever you wish.”
  • 1 Samuel 11:11 - But before dawn the next morning, Saul arrived, having divided his army into three detachments. He launched a surprise attack against the Ammonites and slaughtered them the whole morning. The remnant of their army was so badly scattered that no two of them were left together.
  • 1 Samuel 11:12 - Then the people exclaimed to Samuel, “Now where are those men who said, ‘Why should Saul rule over us?’ Bring them here, and we will kill them!”
  • 1 Samuel 11:13 - But Saul replied, “No one will be executed today, for today the Lord has rescued Israel!”
  • 1 Samuel 11:14 - Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let us all go to Gilgal to renew the kingdom.”
  • 1 Samuel 11:15 - So they all went to Gilgal, and in a solemn ceremony before the Lord they made Saul king. Then they offered peace offerings to the Lord, and Saul and all the Israelites were filled with joy.
  • Psalms 83:4 - “Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.”
  • Psalms 83:5 - Yes, this was their unanimous decision. They signed a treaty as allies against you—
  • Psalms 83:6 - these Edomites and Ishmaelites; Moabites and Hagrites;
  • Psalms 83:7 - Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites; and people from Philistia and Tyre.
  • Psalms 83:8 - Assyria has joined them, too, and is allied with the descendants of Lot. Interlude
  • Deuteronomy 2:19 - and enter the land of the Ammonites, the descendants of Lot. But do not bother them or start a war with them. I have given the land of Ammon to them as their property, and I will not give you any of their land.’”
