  • Joshua 16:5 - This was the territory of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans: The border of their inheritance went from Ataroth-addar on the east to Upper Beth-horon.
  • Joshua 16:6 - In the north the border went westward from Michmethath; it turned eastward from Taanath-shiloh and passed it east of Janoah.
  • Joshua 16:7 - From Janoah it descended to Ataroth and Naarah, and then reached Jericho and went to the Jordan.
  • Joshua 16:8 - From Tappuah the border went westward along the Brook of Kanah and ended at the Mediterranean Sea. This was the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants of Ephraim by their clans, together with
  • Joshua 16:9 - the cities set apart for the descendants of Ephraim within the inheritance of the descendants of Manasseh — all these cities with their settlements.
  • Joshua 16:10 - However, they did not drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer. So the Canaanites still live in Ephraim today, but they are forced laborers.
  • Psalms 128:1 - How happy is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways!
  • Psalms 1:1 - How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers!
  • Psalms 1:2 - Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night.
  • Psalms 1:3 - He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.
  • Numbers 32:1 - The Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. When they surveyed the lands of Jazer and Gilead, they saw that the region was a good one for livestock.
  • Numbers 32:2 - So the Gadites and Reubenites came to Moses, the priest Eleazar, and the leaders of the community and said,
  • Numbers 32:3 - “The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,
  • Numbers 32:4 - which the Lord struck down before the community of Israel, is good land for livestock, and your servants own livestock.”
  • Numbers 32:5 - They said, “If we have found favor with you, let this land be given to your servants as a possession. Don’t make us cross the Jordan.”
  • Numbers 32:6 - But Moses asked the Gadites and Reubenites, “Should your brothers go to war while you stay here?
  • Numbers 32:7 - Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing into the land the Lord has given them?
  • Numbers 32:8 - That’s what your ancestors did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land.
  • Numbers 32:9 - After they went up as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them.
  • Numbers 32:10 - So the Lord’s anger burned that day, and he swore an oath:
  • Numbers 32:11 - ‘Because they did not remain loyal to me, none of the men twenty years old or more who came up from Egypt will see the land I swore to give Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob  —
  • Numbers 32:12 - none except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they did remain loyal to the Lord.’
  • Numbers 32:13 - The Lord’s anger burned against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years until the whole generation that had done what was evil in the Lord’s sight was gone.
  • Numbers 32:14 - And here you, a brood of sinners, stand in your ancestors’ place adding even more to the Lord’s burning anger against Israel.
  • Numbers 32:15 - If you turn back from following him, he will once again leave this people in the wilderness, and you will destroy all of them.”
  • Numbers 32:16 - Then they approached him and said, “We want to build sheep pens here for our livestock and cities for our dependents.
  • Numbers 32:17 - But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our dependents will remain in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
  • Numbers 32:18 - We will not return to our homes until each of the Israelites has taken possession of his inheritance.
  • Numbers 32:19 - Yet we will not have an inheritance with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance will be across the Jordan to the east.”
  • Numbers 32:20 - Moses replied to them, “If you do this — if you arm yourselves for battle before the Lord,
  • Numbers 32:21 - and every one of your armed men crosses the Jordan before the Lord until he has driven his enemies from his presence,
  • Numbers 32:22 - and the land is subdued before the Lord — afterward you may return and be free from obligation to the Lord and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the Lord.
  • Numbers 32:23 - But if you don’t do this, you will certainly sin against the Lord; be sure your sin will catch up with you.
  • Numbers 32:24 - Build cities for your dependents and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”
  • Numbers 32:25 - The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, “Your servants will do just as my lord commands.
  • Numbers 32:26 - Our dependents, wives, livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the cities of Gilead,
  • Numbers 32:27 - but your servants are equipped for war before the Lord and will go across to the battle as my lord orders.”
  • Numbers 32:28 - So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the Israelite tribes.
  • Numbers 32:29 - Moses told them, “If the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you, every man in battle formation before the Lord, and the land is subdued before you, you are to give them the land of Gilead as a possession.
  • Numbers 32:30 - But if they don’t go across with you in battle formation, they must accept land in Canaan with you.”
  • Numbers 32:31 - The Gadites and Reubenites replied, “What the Lord has spoken to your servants is what we will do.
  • Numbers 32:32 - We will cross over in battle formation before the Lord into the land of Canaan, but we will keep our hereditary possession across the Jordan.”
  • Numbers 32:33 - So Moses gave them — the Gadites, Reubenites, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph — the kingdom of King Sihon of the Amorites and the kingdom of King Og of Bashan, the land including its cities with the territories surrounding them.
  • Numbers 32:34 - The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
  • Numbers 32:35 - Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
  • Numbers 32:36 - Beth-nimrah, and Beth-haran as fortified cities, and built sheep pens.
  • Numbers 32:37 - The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
  • Numbers 32:38 - as well as Nebo and Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt.
  • Numbers 32:39 - The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.
  • Numbers 32:40 - So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir son of Manasseh, and they settled in it.
  • Numbers 32:41 - Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, went and captured their villages, which he renamed Jair’s Villages.
  • Numbers 32:42 - Nobah went and captured Kenath with its surrounding villages and called it Nobah after his own name.
  • Genesis 48:1 - Some time after this, Joseph was told, “Your father is weaker.” So he set out with his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
  • Ezekiel 19:11 - It had strong branches, fit for the scepters of rulers; its height towered among the clouds. So it was conspicuous for its height as well as its many branches.
  • Joshua 17:14 - Joseph’s descendants said to Joshua, “Why did you give us only one tribal allotment as an inheritance? We have many people, because the Lord has been blessing us greatly.”
  • Joshua 17:15 - “If you have so many people,” Joshua replied to them, “go to the forest and clear an area for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and the Rephaim, because Ephraim’s hill country is too small for you.”
  • Joshua 17:16 - But the descendants of Joseph said, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who inhabit the valley area have iron chariots, both at Beth-shean with its surrounding villages and in the Jezreel Valley.”
  • Joshua 17:17 - So Joshua replied to Joseph’s family (that is, Ephraim and Manasseh), “You have many people and great strength. You will not have just one allotment,
  • Genesis 30:22 - Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her and opened her womb.

  • Deuteronomy 33:16 - with the choice gifts of the land and everything in it; and with the favor of him who appeared in the burning bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph, on the brow of the prince of his brothers.
  • Deuteronomy 33:17 - His firstborn bull has splendor, and horns like those of a wild ox; he gores all the peoples with them to the ends of the earth. Such are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and such are the thousands of Manasseh.
  • Genesis 46:27 - And Joseph’s sons who were born to him in Egypt: two persons. All those of Jacob’s household who came to Egypt: seventy persons.
