  • Matthew 23:16 - “Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’
  • Matthew 23:17 - You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?
  • Matthew 23:18 - You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’
  • Matthew 23:19 - You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
  • Matthew 23:20 - Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
  • Matthew 23:21 - And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it.
  • Matthew 23:22 - And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.
  • Matthew 23:23 - “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.
  • Matthew 23:24 - You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
  • Jeremiah 29:31 - “Send this message to all the exiles: ‘This is what the Lord says about Shemaiah the Nehelamite: Because Shemaiah has prophesied to you, even though I did not send him, and has persuaded you to trust in lies,

  • Luke 20:45 - While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,
  • Luke 20:46 - “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.
  • Luke 20:47 - They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”
  • Jeremiah 29:20 - Therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles whom I have sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  • Mark 7:14 - Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.
  • Matthew 19:17 - “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
  • Matthew 19:18 - “Which ones?” he inquired. Jesus replied, “ ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony,
  • Romans 7:7 - What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.”
  • Romans 7:8 - But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead.
  • Romans 7:9 - Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.

  • Matthew 5:34 - But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne;
