亞撒在位第三十六年，以色列王巴沙上來攻打猶大，修築拉瑪，不許人離開或進入猶大王亞撒的國境。於是亞撒從耶和華的殿和王宮的庫房裡取出金銀來，送給住在大馬士革的亞蘭王便．哈達，說：“你父親和我父親曾經立約，你和我也要立約。現在我把金銀送給你，請你去廢除你和以色列王巴沙訂立的約，好使他離開我而去。”便．哈達聽從了亞撒王的話，就派遣他屬下的眾軍長去攻擊以色列的城市，他們攻陷了以雲、但、亞伯．瑪音和拿弗他利一切貯藏貨物的城市。巴沙聽見了，就停止修築拉瑪，把工程都停止了。於是亞撒王帶領猶大眾人，把巴沙修築拉瑪所用的石頭和木材都搬走，用來修築迦巴和米斯巴。

巴沙聽見了，就停止修築拉瑪，仍然留在得撒。於是亞撒王通告猶大眾人，沒有一個人例外。他們就把巴沙修築拉瑪所用的石頭和木料運走；亞撒王用那些材料來修築便雅憫的迦巴和米斯巴。

以薩迦家族亞希雅的兒子巴沙密謀背叛拿答。拿答和以色列眾人正在圍攻非利士地的基比頓的時候，巴沙在基比頓把拿答殺了。

全以色列的祭司和利未人，都從各地來歸向羅波安。利未人放棄了他們的草場和產業，來到猶大和耶路撒冷，是因為耶羅波安和他的兒子排斥他們，不准他們作祭司事奉耶和華。耶羅波安為邱壇、公山羊神，以及他鑄造的牛犢，自己設立了祭司。以色列眾支派中所有定意尋求耶和華以色列的神的，都隨著利未人來到耶路撒冷，向耶和華他們列祖的神獻祭。這樣，他們就加強了猶大國的勢力，使所羅門的兒子羅波安強盛了三年，因為他們在這三年，跟隨了大衛和所羅門的道路。

耶和華這樣說：“在拉瑪聽見有聲音，是痛哭哀號的聲音；拉結為她的兒女哀哭，不肯受安慰，因為他們都不在了。”

後來撒母耳回拉瑪去，掃羅也上他所住的基比亞自己的家去了。
