A servant girl approached him and said,“ You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”But he denied it in front of everyone:“ I don’t know what you’re talking about.”When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there,“ This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”And again he denied it with an oath:“ I don’t know the man!”After a little while those standing there approached and said to Peter,“ You really are one of them, since even your accent gives you away.”Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath,“ I don’t know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed,and Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken,“ Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Neither is it the case that all of Abraham’s children are his descendants. On the contrary, your offspring will be traced through Isaac.That is, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but the children of the promise are considered to be the offspring.For this is the statement of the promise: At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.

Who was it you dreaded and feared, so that you lied and didn’t remember me or take it to heart? I have kept silent for a long time, haven’t I? So you do not fear me.

Sarah denied it.“ I did not laugh,” she said, because she was afraid. But he replied,“ No, you did laugh.”

Then Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and said to them,“ Rulers of the people and elders:If we are being examined today about a good deed done to a disabled man, by what means he was healed,let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead— by him this man is standing here before you healthy.This Jesus is the stone rejected by you builders, which has become the cornerstone.There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved.”When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus.

But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear them or be intimidated,but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by a slave and the other by a free woman.But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise.These things are being taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai and bears children into slavery— this is Hagar.Now Hagar represents Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother.
