正月初十，百姓從約旦河上來，就在耶利哥東邊的吉甲安營。

耶和華說：「你出來站在山上，在耶和華面前。」看哪，耶和華從那裏經過。在耶和華面前有烈風大作，山崩石裂，耶和華卻不在風中；風後有地震，耶和華也不在其中；

耶和華對約書亞說：「我今日將埃及的羞辱從你們身上除掉了。」因此，那地方名叫吉甲，直到今日。

又膏寧示的孫子耶戶作以色列王，並膏亞伯‧米何拉人沙法的兒子以利沙作先知接續你。將來逃過哈薛之刀的，必被耶戶所殺；逃過耶戶之刀的，必被以利沙所殺。但我在以色列中留下七千人，是未曾向巴力屈膝，未曾親吻巴力的。」於是，以利亞離開那裏走了，遇見沙法的兒子以利沙；他正在耕田，在他前頭有十二對牛，自己趕着第十二對。以利亞經過他，把自己的外衣搭在他身上。以利沙就離開牛，跑到以利亞那裏，說：「請你讓我先與父母吻別，然後我就跟隨你。」以利亞對他說：「因我對你所做的事，你去吧，然後回來。」以利沙離開他回去，宰了一對牛，用套牛的器具煮肉給百姓吃，隨後就起身跟隨以利亞，服事他。

耶穌被接上升的日子將到，他決定面向耶路撒冷走去。

他們邊走邊說話的時候，看哪，有火馬和火焰車出現，把二人隔開，以利亞就乘旋風升天去了。

那時，耶和華從旋風中回答約伯說：

兩位先知聽見有大聲音從天上對他們說：「上這裏來。」他們就駕着雲上了天，他們的仇敵也看見了。

以利沙回到吉甲，那地正有饑荒。先知的門徒坐在他面前，他吩咐僕人說：「你把大鍋放在火上，給先知的門徒熬湯。」

恐怕我一離開你，耶和華的靈就把你提到我所不知道的地方去。這樣，我去告訴亞哈，他若找不到你，就必殺我。僕人是自幼敬畏耶和華的。

說了這些話，他們正看的時候，他被接上升，有一朵雲彩從他們眼前把他接去。

他自己在曠野走了一日的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，就坐在那裏求死，說：「耶和華啊，現在夠了！求你取我的性命吧，因為我不比我的祖先好。」
