I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.

I hated everything I had worked for on earth. I’ll have to leave all of it to someone who lives after me.

I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me,

I came to hate all my hard work here on earth, for I must leave to others everything I have earned.

I hated all my work that I labored at under the sun because I must leave it to the one who comes after me.

So I hated all the fruit of my labor for which I had labored under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.

For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others. (niv)

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. (niv)

“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ (niv)

So the Lord said to Solomon,“ Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates.Nevertheless, for the sake of David your father, I will not do it during your lifetime. I will tear it out of the hand of your son.Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom from him, but will give him one tribe for the sake of David my servant and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.” (niv)

But better than both is the one who has never been born, who has not seen the evil that is done under the sun. (niv)

I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards.I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees.I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem as well— the delights of a man’s heart.I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me. (niv)

What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun? (niv)

I have seen a grievous evil under the sun: wealth hoarded to the harm of its owners,or wealth lost through some misfortune, so that when they have children there is nothing left for them to inherit. (niv)

I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock.Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. (niv)

To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. (niv)

This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them— for this is their lot. (niv)

Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun— all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. (niv)

“ He answered,‘ Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family,for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ (niv)

By your hand save me from such people, Lord, from those of this world whose reward is in this life. May what you have stored up for the wicked fill their bellies; may their children gorge themselves on it, and may there be leftovers for their little ones. (niv)

I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! (niv)
