他們說「請為我們立一個王來治理我們」，這話讓撒母耳很愁煩，他就向耶和華禱告。耶和華對撒母耳說：「你就聽從民眾對你說的一切話。其實他們不是厭棄你，而是厭棄我作他們的王。

耶和華對撒母耳說：「你就聽從民眾的話，給他們立一個王。」於是撒母耳對以色列人說：「你們各回自己的城去吧。」

但他們說：「你不可出戰！因為如果我們不得不逃跑，他們不會放在心上，就算我們死了一半，他們也不會放在心上；要知道，你一人就相當於我們一萬人。因此，你最好留在城裡為我們提供援助。」

可是為了你們的緣故，我更需要留在世上。既然我深信這一點，就知道我會活下去，並且將繼續和你們大家在一起，好使你們在信仰上有長進、有喜樂。
