耶和華對摩西說：「你把以下條例告訴以色列人。「從七月十五日開始，你們要一連七天向耶和華守住棚節。第一天，你們要舉行聖會，不可做日常工作。這七天你們要獻火祭給耶和華。第八天要舉行聖會，獻火祭給耶和華。這是莊嚴的聚會，你們不可做日常工作。「以上是耶和華所定的節期。在這些節期裡，你們要召開聖會，按規定的日子獻給耶和華燔祭、素祭、奠祭和其他祭物。除了守安息日並向耶和華獻供物、還願祭和自願獻的祭以外，你們還要守這些節期。「你們收割完後，從七月十五日起，要一連七天慶祝耶和華的節期，第一天和第八天是安息之日。第一天，你們要摘下樹上結的上好果子，折下棕樹枝、葉子濃密的樹枝與河邊的柳枝，在你們的上帝耶和華面前歡慶七天。在每年七月的這七天，你們要向耶和華守這節期。這是永遠不變的律例，你們世世代代都要遵守。你們要搭棚居住七天，所有以色列人都要住在棚裡。這樣，你們的後代就會知道，我帶領以色列人離開埃及後，曾讓他們住在棚裡。我是你們的上帝耶和華。」

在七月住棚節的時候，以色列人都聚集到所羅門王那裡。

「在收藏好穀物和新酒後，你們要守七天的住棚節。住棚節期間，你們要和兒女、僕婢、同城的利未人、寄居者及孤兒寡婦一起歡慶。要在你們的上帝耶和華選定的地方，為祂守住棚節七天；要滿心歡喜，因為你們的上帝耶和華賜福你們，使你們的出產豐富、凡事順利。

前來攻打耶路撒冷的列國中的倖存者，必每年上來敬拜大君王——萬軍之耶和華，並且守住棚節。地上萬族中若有人不上耶路撒冷敬拜大君王——萬軍之耶和華，他們必沒有雨水。埃及人若不上來敬拜，也必沒有雨水，耶和華必使他們和不上來守住棚節的列國一樣遭受瘟疫。這將是埃及和不上來守住棚節的列國所得的懲罰。

當時，他們發現耶和華藉摩西吩咐的律法上記載，以色列人要在七月節期期間住在棚子裡，並且要在他們的各城邑和耶路撒冷宣佈：「你們要上山取橄欖樹、野橄欖樹、番石榴樹、棕櫚樹和其他茂密樹木的枝子，照著所規定的搭棚。」於是，民眾都出去取來樹枝，在自家的屋頂上、庭院裡、上帝殿的院子裡、水門的廣場上和以法蓮門的廣場上搭棚。從流亡之地歸回的民眾都搭起棚子，住在裡面。從嫩的兒子約書亞時代直到那天，以色列人從沒有這樣做過。民眾非常歡喜。從第一天到最後一天，以斯拉每天都誦讀上帝的律法書。他們守節期七天，第八天根據典章舉行莊嚴的聚會。

節期最後一天，也是整個節期的高潮，耶穌站起來高聲說：「人若渴了，可以到我這裡來喝。正如聖經所言，信我的人，『從他裡面要流出活水的江河來』。」耶穌這話是指信祂的人要得到聖靈，但當時聖靈還沒有降臨，因為耶穌還沒有得到榮耀。

猶太人的住棚節快到了，

所羅門和從哈馬口直至埃及小河而來的全體以色列人聚成一大群會眾，一起守節期七天。第八天舉行莊嚴的聚會，又舉行七天獻壇禮。之後，他們又歡慶七天。七月二十三日，所羅門王讓民眾各回本鄉。他們看見耶和華向大衛、所羅門和祂的以色列子民所施的恩惠，就滿心歡喜地回家去了。
