You conceive chaff, you give birth to straw; your breath is a fire that consumes you.

Assyria, your plans and actions are like straw. Your anger is a fire that will destroy you.

You conceive chaff; you give birth to stubble; your breath is a fire that will consume you.

You Assyrians produce nothing but dry grass and stubble. Your own breath will turn to fire and consume you.

Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble, And dry grass collapses in the flame, So their root will become like rot, and their blossom blow away like dust; For they have rejected the Law of the Lord of armies, And discarded the word of the Holy One of Israel.

“ Be broken, you peoples, and be shattered; And listen, all remote places of the earth. Get ready, yet be shattered; Get ready, yet be shattered.Devise a plan, but it will fail; State a proposal, but it will not stand, For God is with us.”

The strong man will become like flax fiber, And his work a spark. So they shall both burn together And there will be no one to extinguish them.

And the Assyrian will fall by a sword not wielded by a man, And a sword not of man will devour him. So he will not escape the sword, And his young men will become forced laborers.“ His rock will pass away because of panic, And his officers will be terrified by the flag,” Declares the Lord, whose fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.

But the multitude of your enemies will become like fine dust, And the multitude of the ruthless ones like the chaff which blows away; And it will happen instantly, suddenly.From the Lord of armies you will be punished with thunder and earthquake and loud noise, With whirlwind and tempest and the flame of a consuming fire.And the multitude of all the nations who wage war against Ariel, Even all who wage war against her and her stronghold, and who distress her, Will be like a dream, a vision of the night.It will be as when a hungry person dreams— And behold, he is eating; But when he awakens, his hunger is not satisfied, Or as when a thirsty person dreams— And behold, he is drinking, But when he awakens, behold, he is faint And his thirst is not quenched. So will the multitude of all the nations be Who wage war against Mount Zion.

For they have conspired together with one mind; They make a covenant against You:The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites;Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;Assyria also has joined them; They have become a help to the children of Lot. SelahDeal with them as with Midian, As with Sisera and Jabin at the river of Kishon,Who were destroyed at En dor, Who became like dung for the ground.Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb, And all their leaders like Zebah and Zalmunna,Who said,“ Let’s possess for ourselves The pastures of God.”My God, make them like the whirling dust, Like chaff before the wind.Like fire that burns the forest, And like a flame that sets the mountains on fire,So pursue them with Your heavy gale, And terrify them with Your storm.Fill their faces with dishonor, So that they will seek Your name, Lord.May they be ashamed and dismayed forever, And may they be humiliated and perish,So that they will know that You alone, whose name is the Lord, Are the Most High over all the earth.

They conceive harm and give birth to wrongdoing, And their mind prepares deception.”

Why are the nations restless And the peoples plotting in vain?

And the Lord will cause His voice of authority to be heard, And the descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger, And in the flame of a consuming fire In cloudburst, downpour, and hailstones.For at the voice of the Lord Assyria will be terrified, When He strikes with the rod.And every blow of the rod of punishment, Which the Lord will lay on him, Will be with the music of tambourines and lyres; And in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight them.For Topheth has long been ready, Indeed, it has been prepared for the king. He has made it deep and large, A pyre of fire with plenty of wood; The breath of the Lord, like a torrent of brimstone, sets it afire.

Yet it does not so intend, Nor does it plan so in its heart, But rather it is its purpose to destroy And to eliminate many nations.For it says,“ Are not my officers all kings?Is not Calno like Carchemish, Or Hamath like Arpad, Or Samaria like Damascus?As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, Whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,Shall I not do the same to Jerusalem and her images Just as I have done to Samaria and her idols?”So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, He will say,“ I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the arrogant pride of his eyes.”For he has said,“ By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did this, Because I have understanding; And I removed the boundaries of the peoples And plundered their treasures, And like a powerful man I brought down their inhabitants,And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a nest, And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened its beak, or chirped.”

Mountains quake because of Him, And the hills come apart; Indeed the earth is upheaved by His presence, The world and all the inhabitants in it.Who can stand before His indignation? Who can endure the burning of His anger? His wrath gushes forth like fire, And the rocks are broken up by Him.The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.But with an overflowing flood He will make a complete end of its site, And will pursue His enemies into darkness.Whatever you devise against the Lord, He will make a complete end of it. Distress will not rise up twice.Like tangled thorns, And like those who are drunken with their drink, They are consumed Like stubble completely dried up.

While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.”

The nations rumble on like the rumbling of many waters, But He will rebuke them, and they will flee far away, And be chased like chaff on the mountains before the wind, Or like whirling dust before a gale.

We were pregnant, we writhed in labor, We gave birth, as it seems, only to wind. We could not accomplish deliverance for the earth, Nor were inhabitants of the world born.
