於是古經所載亞伯漢因信天主而成聖、且稱為「天主之友」云者、乃獲當然之補充、而厥義大備矣。

And the scripture was fulfilled that says,“ Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.

That is what Scripture means where it says,“ Abraham believed God. God accepted Abraham because he believed. So his faith made him right with God.”( Genesis 15:6) And that’s not all. God called Abraham his friend.

and the Scripture was fulfilled that says,“ Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”— and he was called a friend of God.

And so it happened just as the Scriptures say:“ Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God.

即亞伯漢亦未始非因篤信天主、而稱義焉。

經不云乎：『亞伯漢篤信天主、因是而稱義焉。』若徒憑事功、則其所得者乃為酬報、不復為恩賜矣。正惟不以事功為言、而篤信赦罪之主、乃能因其信德而稱義耳。昔大維亦曾詠嘆不恃事功惟賴恩主而成義者之真福云：

此彼之所以成義也。夫經載其稱義、非徒為彼故、亦欲勉吾人因信而成義耳。吾人所信者何、即天主使吾主耶穌死中復活；

人之愛、莫大於為其友舍生；爾能遵行吾之所命、是吾友也。今而後予不稱爾為僕、僕不知其主之所為也。吾稱爾為友者、蓋凡吾所聞於吾父者、悉以示爾矣。

左右釘二盜。

耶穌乃徐以語之曰：『此經已於爾親聆之下見驗於斯日矣。』

經云、「梓人所棄、竟成隅石；

經中又載告諭法老之言曰：『吾使爾崛興、用顯吾能於爾身、用彰吾名於普世。』

古經實已逆睹天主之將使普天萬民因信成義、故預報福音於亞伯漢曰：『天下萬民、咸將蒙休於爾懷中。』然則凡有信德者、必當與富於信德之亞伯漢同受其福矣。若夫徒恃律法者、則實處於咒咀之下。經不云乎：『凡不遵行律法之一切規定者、應服咒詛。』

是天主固未曾棄絕其所預識之子民。抑爾未知經中所載伊理藹向天主控訴義塞之言乎？

試問其若之何而成義耶？在受割之後乎？抑在受割之前乎？曰：不在受割之後、而在受割之前也。其受割之儀式、不過為因信成義之印證、而其信德則於未割之時、固已全具矣。因是亞伯漢乃為未受割而因信成義者之父、

『兄弟乎！聖神假大維之口、預言茹達斯引捕耶穌、此經已見應驗；

然律法之所以將一切歸納於罪責之下者、正欲使後人篤信耶穌基督之福音、而承受天主之恩諾耳。

全部聖經、皆天主之所默啟、有益於人、其所以覺世牖民、警惡勸善、導人於正者、亦云備矣。

蓋經有之：『我選一隅石、置之西溫上；斯石我所珍、賴之無觖望。』
