耶和華啊，他們在急難中尋求你。你的管教臨到他們身上時，他們傾吐低聲的禱告。

他們在床上呼號，卻不誠心哀求我；他們為求五穀新酒而聚集，卻背叛我。

他們以背向我，不以面向我；我雖然一再教導他們，他們卻不聽從，不領受訓誨，

從那年起，他們欺壓迫害以色列人，在約旦河東，亞摩利人境內，基列一帶所有的以色列人，長達十八年。亞捫人渡過約旦河去攻打猶大和便雅憫，以及以法蓮家族。以色列的處境非常困苦。以色列人哀求耶和華說：「我們得罪了你，因為我們離棄了我們的神，去事奉諸巴力。」耶和華對以色列人說：「我豈沒有救你們脫離埃及人、亞摩利人、亞捫人和非利士人嗎？西頓人、亞瑪力人和馬雲人欺壓你們，你們哀求我，我也拯救你們脫離他們的手。你們竟離棄我去事奉別神！所以我不再救你們了。你們去哀求你們所選擇的神明；你們遭遇急難的時候，讓它們救你們吧！」以色列人對耶和華說：「我們犯罪了，照你看為好的待我們，只求你今日拯救我們吧！」以色列人就除掉他們中間的外邦神明，事奉耶和華。耶和華因以色列所受的苦難而心裏焦急。

製造偶像的人盡都虛空，他們所喜悅的全無益處；偶像的見證人毫無所見，毫無所知，以致他們羞愧。誰製造神像，鑄造偶像？這些都是無益的。看哪，他的同夥都必羞愧。工匠不過是人，任他們聚集，任他們站立吧！他們都必懼怕，一同羞愧。鐵匠用工具在火炭上工作，用鎚打出形狀，用他有力的膀臂來錘。他因飢餓而無力氣；因未喝水而疲倦。木匠拉線，用筆劃出樣子，用鉋子鉋成形狀，又用圓規劃了模樣。他仿照人的體態，做出美妙的人形，放在廟裏。他砍伐香柏樹，又取杉樹和橡樹，在樹林中讓它茁壯；或栽種松樹，得雨水滋潤長大。這樹，人可用以生火；他拿一些來取暖，又搧火烤餅，而且做神像供跪拜，做雕刻的偶像向它叩拜。他將一半的木頭燒在火中，用它烤肉來吃；吃飽了，就自己取暖說：「啊哈，我暖和了，我看到火了！」然後又用剩下的一半做了一個神明，就是雕刻的偶像，向這偶像俯伏叩拜，向它禱告說：「求你拯救我，因你是我的神明。」他們既無知，又不思想；因為耶和華蒙蔽他們的眼，使他們看不見，塞住他們的心，使他們不明白。沒有一個心裏醒悟，有知識，有聰明，能說：「我曾拿一部分用火燃燒，在炭火上烤餅，也烤肉來吃。這剩下的，我豈要做可憎之像嗎？我豈可向木頭叩拜呢？」他以灰塵為食，心裏迷糊，以致偏邪，不能自救，也不能說：「我右手中豈不是有虛謊嗎？」

在仇敵面前，我必如東風颳散他們，遭難的日子，我要以背向他們，不以臉看他們。」

他殺他們的時候，他們才求問他，回心轉意，切切尋求神。他們追念神是他們的磐石，至高的神是他們的救贖主。他們卻用口諂媚他，用舌向他說謊。他們的心向他不堅定，不忠於他的約。

他們的偶像是金的，是銀的，是人手所造的，有口卻不能言，有眼卻不能看，有耳卻不能聽，有鼻卻不能聞，有手卻不能摸，有腳卻不能走，有喉卻不能說話。造它們的要像它們一樣，凡靠它們的也必如此。

主耶和華如此說：「因你忘記我，將我丟在背後，所以你要擔當你的淫行和淫蕩。」

然後他領我到耶和華殿的內院。看哪，在耶和華殿門口、走廊和祭壇中間，約有二十五個人背向耶和華的殿，面向東方，向東拜太陽。

你這住黎巴嫩、在香柏樹上搭窩的，有痛苦臨到你，如疼痛臨到臨產的婦人，那時你何等可憐！

你是野驢，習慣曠野，慾心發動時就呼吸急促，發情時誰能使牠轉回呢？凡尋找牠的必不費力，在牠的季節必能尋見牠。

他們如同畜牲，盡都愚昧。偶像的訓誨算甚麼呢？偶像不過是木頭，

他們從錢囊中倒出金子，用天平秤出銀子，雇銀匠造成神像，他們又俯伏，又叩拜。他們抬起神像，扛在肩上，安置在定處，使它站立，不離本位；人呼求它，它卻不回答，也無法救人脫離災難。你們當記得這事，立定心意。叛逆的人哪，要留心思想。

我要去，我要回到原處，等他們自覺有罪，尋求我的面；急難時他們必切切尋求我。

偶像有甚麼益處呢？製造者雕刻它，鑄成偶像，作虛假的教師；製造者倚靠的是自己所做的啞巴偶像。禍哉！那對木頭說「醒起」，對啞巴石頭說「起來」的人！偶像豈能教導人呢？看哪，它以金銀包裹，其中並無氣息。
