耶穌還在對眾人說話的時候，不料，他母親和他兄弟站在外邊想要跟他說話。有人告訴他：「看哪！你母親和你兄弟站在外邊，想要跟你說話。」他卻回答那對他說話的人，說：「誰是我的母親？誰是我的兄弟？」於是他伸手指着門徒，說：「看哪，我的母親，我的兄弟！凡遵行我天父旨意的人就是我的兄弟、姊妹和母親。」

那時，耶穌的母親和他兄弟來，站在外邊，打發人去叫他。有許多人在耶穌周圍坐着，他們就告訴他說：「看哪！你母親、你兄弟和你姊妹在外邊找你。」耶穌回答他們：「誰是我的母親？誰是我的兄弟？」就環視那周圍坐着的人，說：「看哪，我的母親，我的兄弟！凡遵行神旨意的人就是我的兄弟姊妹和母親。」

耶穌的家人聽見，就出來要拉住他，因為他們說他癲狂了。
