When they are diminished and brought low Through oppression, affliction, and sorrow,

他們又因受威壓，受患難，有愁苦，而人數減少，地位受屈抑。

後來因著壓迫、災禍和悲哀的事，他們就人數減少，降為卑屈。

厥後復遭暴虐、患難憂苦、民乃減少、而卑抑兮、

復降眚災、加以禍患、俾民數衰少、民心悚懼兮、

民因遭暴虐患難而愁苦、遂至滅少卑微、

主德蕩蕩。無偏無黨。

Then their numbers decreased, and they were humbled by oppression, calamity and sorrow;

Then the number of God’s people got smaller. They were made humble by trouble, suffering and sorrow.

When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow,

When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,

When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow,

When they become few and lowly Because of oppression, misery, and sorrow,

Again, they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, trouble, and sorrow.

When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow,

Again, they are minished and brought low through oppression, affliction, and sorrow.

As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering.

In those days the Lord began to cut off parts of Israel; and Hazael conquered them in all the territory of Israel

For He left of the army of Jehoahaz only fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers; for the king of Syria had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing.

For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel:“ The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor When it is time to thresh her; Yet a little while And the time of her harvest will come.”“ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon Has devoured me, he has crushed me; He has made me an empty vessel, He has swallowed me up like a monster; He has filled his stomach with my delicacies, He has spit me out.

So the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with rigor.And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage— in mortar, in brick, and in all manner of service in the field. All their service in which they made them serve was with rigor.

Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!”And the Lord said to Satan,“ Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house;and a messenger came to Job and said,“ The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,when the Sabeans raided them and took them away— indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”While he was still speaking, another also came and said,“ The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”While he was still speaking, another also came and said,“ The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

So it was, whenever Israel had sown, Midianites would come up; also Amalekites and the people of the East would come up against them.Then they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey.For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it.So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord.

It came to pass, at the end of seven years, that the woman returned from the land of the Philistines; and she went to make an appeal to the king for her house and for her land.

But she said to them,“ Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.I went out full, and the Lord has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the Lord has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?”

And in those times there was no peace to the one who went out, nor to the one who came in, but great turmoil was on all the inhabitants of the lands.So nation was destroyed by nation, and city by city, for God troubled them with every adversity.

Now in my prosperity I said,“ I shall never be moved.”Lord, by Your favor You have made my mountain stand strong; You hid Your face, and I was troubled.

For the Lord saw that the affliction of Israel was very bitter; and whether bond or free, there was no helper for Israel.

Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, And the hungry have ceased to hunger. Even the barren has borne seven, And she who has many children has become feeble.“ The Lord kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and brings up.The Lord makes poor and makes rich; He brings low and lifts up.

Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food.

Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.So God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine.”’

And Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz.
