    The Vine and the Branches
    1“I am15:1 Ex 3:14; Jn 8:24,58the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
    2Every branch in me that does not produce fruit he removes,15:2 Mt 3:10; 7:19; 15:13; Lk 3:9; 13:6–9; Jn 15:6; Rm 11:17,22and he prunes every branch that produces fruit so that it will produce more fruit.
    3You are already clean15:3 Ps 24:4; Ti 1:15because of the word I have spoken to you.
    4Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.15:4 Jn 6:56; 8:28; 1Jn 2:5
    5I am the vine; 15:5 Jms 3:12you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit,15:5 Mk 4:8because you can do nothing without me.
    6If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside15:6 Jn 15:2like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire,15:6 2Th 1:8and they are burned.15:6 1Th 1:8; 2Pt 3:7
    7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.15:7 Jn 14:14
    8My Father is glorified15:8 Jn 11:4; 17:1; 1Pt 2:12by this: that you produce much fruit and prove to be15:8 Or and becomemy disciples.

    9“As the Father has loved me, I have also loved you. Remain in my love.15:9 Col 1:13; 1Jn 5:20; Jd 21
    10If you keep my commands you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.15:10 Jn 5:19
    11“I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete.15:11 1Jn 1:4; 2Jn 12
    12“This is my command: Love one another as I have loved15:12 Jn 3:16you.
    13No one has greater love than this: to lay down his life15:13 Rm 5:8; 1Jn 3:16for his friends.
    14You are my friends if you do what I command you.
    15I do not call you servants anymore, because a servant doesn’t know what his master15:15 Or lord15:15 Col 3:22is doing. I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything I have heard from my Father.
    16You did not choose me, but I chose you.15:16 Mt 24:22I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask15:16 Jn 10:25the Father in my name,15:16 Jn 14:13he will give you.15:16 Jn 11:22; 16:23
    17“This is what I command you: Love one another.
    Persecutions Predicted
    18“If the world hates15:18 Lk 6:27; 19:14you, understand that it hated me before it hated you.
    19If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen15:19 Eph 1:4you out of it, the world hates you.
    20Remember the word I spoke to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’15:20 Jn 13:16If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word,15:20 Jn 8:51they will also keep yours.
    21But they will do all these things to you on account of my name,15:21 Mk 13:13; Jn 10:25because they don’t know15:21 Jn 3:11; 7:28; 20:9the one who sent me.
    22If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin.15:22 Ezk 2:5; 3:7; Jn 9:41; Rm 1:20; 2:1; 6:23Now they have no excuse for their sin.
    23The one who hates me also hates my Father.15:23 Jn 5:23
    24If I had not done the works15:24 Jn 5:36; Heb 3:9; Rv 15:3among them that no one else has done,15:24 Jn 3:2; 7:31; 9:32; 10:32,37they would not be guilty of sin.15:24 Jn 9:41Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.
    25But this happened so that the statement written in their law might be fulfilled:15:25 Jn 12:38; 13:18; 17:12; 18:9,32; 19:24,36They hated me for no reason.15:25Ps 69:415:25 Ps 69:4
    The Counselor’s Ministry
    26“When the Counselor15:26 Jn 14:16comes, the one I will send to you from the Father15:26 Jn 14:26— the Spirit of truth15:26 Ps 119:142; Jn 1:33; 14:17; 16:13; Rm 3:7; 1Jn 4:6who proceeds from the Father — he will testify about me.
    27You also will testify,15:27 Ac 4:20because you have been with me from the beginning.
