David said to him,“ Can you take us down to this raiding party?” He said,“ Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will take you down to this raiding party.”

David said to Saul,“ Why do you pay attention when men say,‘ David is seeking to do you harm’?

Then they said to the king,“ Daniel, who is one of the captives from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the edict that you issued. Three times daily he offers his prayer.”

You must not return an escaped slave to his master when he has run away to you.

King Joash disregarded the loyalty his father Jehoiada had shown him and killed Jehoiada’s son. As Zechariah was dying, he said,“ May the LORD take notice and seek vengeance!”At the beginning of the year the Syrian army attacked Joash and invaded Judah and Jerusalem. They wiped out all the leaders of the people and sent all the plunder they gathered to the king of Damascus.Even though the invading Syrian army was relatively weak, the LORD handed over to them Judah’s very large army, for the people of Judah had abandoned the LORD God of their ancestors. The Syrians gave Joash what he deserved.

He replied,“ My lord the king, my servant deceived me! I said,‘ Let me get my donkey saddled so that I can ride on it and go with the king,’ for I am lame.But my servant has slandered me to my lord the king. But my lord the king is like an angel of God. Do whatever seems appropriate to you.

These sayings also are from the wise: To show partiality in judgment is terrible:The one who says to the guilty,“ You are innocent,” peoples will curse him, and nations will denounce him.

But Doeg the Edomite, who had stationed himself with the servants of Saul, replied,“ I saw this son of Jesse come to Ahimelech son of Ahitub at Nob.He inquired of the LORD for him and gave him provisions. He also gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”

When David had gone a short way beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him. He had a couple of donkeys that were saddled, and on them were two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred raisin cakes, a hundred baskets of summer fruit, and a container of wine.The king asked Ziba,“ Why did you bring these things?” Ziba replied,“ The donkeys are for the king’s family to ride on, the loaves of bread and the summer fruit are for the attendants to eat, and the wine is for those who get exhausted in the desert.”The king asked,“ Where is your master’s grandson?” Ziba replied to the king,“ He remains in Jerusalem, for he said,‘ Today the house of Israel will give back to me my grandfather’s kingdom.’”The king said to Ziba,“ Everything that was Mephibosheth’s now belongs to you.” Ziba replied,“ I bow before you. May I find favor in your sight, my lord the king.”

So let my lord the king now listen to the words of his servant. If the LORD has incited you against me, may he take delight in an offering. But if men have instigated this, may they be cursed before the LORD! For they have driven me away this day from being united with the LORD’s inheritance, saying,‘ Go on, serve other gods!’

Be careful lest you entertain the wicked thought that the seventh year, the year of cancellation of debts, has almost arrived, and your attitude be wrong toward your impoverished fellow Israelite and you do not lend him anything; he will cry out to the LORD against you and you will be regarded as having sinned.

Also, do not pay attention to everything that people say; otherwise, you might even hear your servant cursing you.

Now at that time certain Chaldeans came forward and brought malicious accusations against the Jews.They said to King Nebuchadnezzar,“ O king, live forever!You have issued an edict, O king, that everyone must bow down and pay homage to the golden statue when they hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music.And whoever does not bow down and pay homage must be thrown into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire.But there are Jewish men whom you appointed over the administration of the province of Babylon– Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego– and these men have not shown proper respect to you, O king. They don’t serve your gods and they don’t pay homage to the golden statue that you have erected.”Then Nebuchadnezzar in a fit of rage demanded that they bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego before him. So they brought them before the king.Nebuchadnezzar said to them,“ Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you don’t serve my gods and that you don’t pay homage to the golden statue that I erected?Now if you are ready, when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, trigon, harp, pipes, and all kinds of music, you must bow down and pay homage to the statue that I had made. If you don’t pay homage to it, you will immediately be thrown into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire. Now, who is that god who can rescue you from my power?”Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to King Nebuchadnezzar,“ We do not need to give you a reply concerning this.If our God whom we are serving exists, he is able to rescue us from the furnace of blazing fire, and he will rescue us, O king, from your power as well.But if not, let it be known to you, O king, that we don’t serve your gods, and we will not pay homage to the golden statue that you have erected.”

The king gave another order, and those men who had maliciously accused Daniel were brought and thrown into the lions’ den– they, their children, and their wives. They did not even reach the bottom of the den before the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones.

People will curse the one who withholds grain, but they will praise the one who sells it.

The one who gives to the poor will not lack, but whoever shuts his eyes to them will receive many curses.
